Trespassing and stealing is growing concern ; Concerns raised over public access to 50-acre allotment site [Grimsby Telegraph (UK)]
(Grimsby Telegraph (UK) Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) TOUGH action will be taken against people trespassing on or stealing from allotments, it has been warned.
The pledge has been issued following complaints from plotholders in Grimsby. A row grew between some residents and allotment users at the Saltings, in Littlefield Lane, Grimsby, after an application was submitted for more security fencing, as reported.
Now, concerns have been raised at the 50-acre allotment in Carr Lane, Grimsby, about people accessing the site from Claremont Road. 1
Some plotholders claim they have been threatened by dog walkers, because they have been challenged for trespassing.
Mark Perritt, pictured right, secretary of the Grimsby and District Allotment Association, said there has also been fly- tipping He continued: "We are concerned about the safety of visitors and their young families when dogs have been let off their leads to roam. "And what if someone was injured Would they be able to claim compensation from the allotment owners "It is not public - they are trespassing. It is important that the site is secure."
The site is home to 600 plots, and there are currently about 200 people using it.
A spokesperson for North East Lincolnshire Council said: "Allotments are not public spaces.
"The council and its regeneration partner, Balfour Beatty, take any incident of trespass or unlawful behaviour on allotments seriously and legal action will be considered in all cases.
"Anyone who is not a tenant or a registered helper is not permitted on any allotment site. "Should your plot fall victim to crime in any form, you must report the matter to the police." He urged allotment holders to make sure that gates are locked when entering and exiting allotments, adding: "It is up to the tenant to help keep allotment sites secure by not copying or distributing allotment gate keys and reporting any breaches in site security."
