Main Street 'dressing up'

Feb 19, 2013 (Pauls Valley Daily Democrat - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- EMANN@PVDEMOCRAT.COM -- For every special occasion there is a chance to dress for success, though it isn't every day that it inspires a unique fundraising opportunity.

The special occasion just happens to be the Sweet on Main Street awards reception and the opportunity came from an anonymous friend looking for new owners for used formal dresses.

Already having a silent auction in place at the event set for Thursday, Feb. 28 at 7 p.m., Main Street Pauls Valley Director Samantha Robb saw an opportunity to include the dresses as a way to raise additional funds for their community work.

"This is a great way for people to get rid of old dresses," said Robb. "I'm calling this the Lookin' Sweet on Main Street Formal Fundraiser." What started out as several dresses from one individual has continued in more donations from other area residents and something people can actually start bidding for today at the Main Street office, corner of Paul and Walnut streets.

There will be pictures of the dresses modeled posted there as well where people can bid, which will need to be done in person to make sure the dress size is what bidders are looking for, and will each start off at $25.

"It's something that someone mentioned a couple of months ago, it didn't look like it was going to materialize and then she delivered," said Robb, noting how bidding will continue every day at the office until the day of Sweet.

"People can come in for two weeks and do the silent auction... The dresses are all different sizes, we don't mind people trying them on and then making a bid if they like." Robb added how it also provides an opportunity for people even to potentially save money on a dress for upcoming occasions like prom, where one can spend quite a bit more for something brand new.

She can certainly relate to how much of a stretch finding something just right for that can be having raised a daughter and people can also get a preview of the dresses on the Main Street facebook page as well.

If someone feels inspired to add to the dress collection, Robb will gladly accept additional donations. As of this past week there were 27 dresses to choose from.

"I can tell you as a mom of a daughter how difficult it is... Maybe they can't afford a fancy expensive dress," said Robb, who added how all dresses are in great condition.

"Hopefully they'll all get a home... If this goes really well we might make it a regular part of Sweet on Main Street." For additional information call Robb at 405-238-2555.
