Quest Software (News - Alert) has announced a new strategic initiative with StorSimple, a provider of hybrid cloud storage technology for VMware infrastructures. The new strategic initiative calls on Quest to deliver a single VMware Ready certified hybrid cloud backup, restore and disaster recovery solution.
“By storing vRanger data on the StorSimple appliance, Quest’s customers can securely add a backup-to-disk solution with automated cloud archiving to their virtual machine data protection strategy,” said Ursheet Parikh, founder and CEO of StorSimple, in a release.
Moreover, the vRanger data stored in the cloud can be restored to any location using StorSimple Cloud Clones to provide enterprise class fast disaster recovery for 90 percent less cost than traditional solutions, according to Parikh.
Thanks to the combination of Quest vRanger and the StorSimple Hybrid Cloud Storage Appliance, vRanger users now have access to a VMware virtual machine backup-to-disk solution with automated cloud archiving.
Today’s exploding corporate data has organizations actively seeking cost-effective, dynamic cloud-based storage solutions that integrate seamlessly into their enterprise backup and recovery programs, said John Maxwell, vice president for data protection products at Quest Software.
Poor integration, however, between the IT environment and the cloud provider often makes that a challenging proposition, Maxwell explained, adding that Quest is solving that challenge for users of vRanger by working with StorSimple to deliver access to a technology that simplifies cloud storage by providing primary storage, archiving, data protection and disaster recovery in one solution.
The StorSimple Hybrid Cloud Storage Appliance is deployed as an appliance in the data center. Company officials said that it makes cloud storage services as accessible and secure as traditional storage, eliminating the need to add complexity to the existing backup environment.
Moreover, it’s touted as an ideal fit for Quest vRanger, which protects VMware virtual environments. Company officials said that the StorSimple Hybrid Cloud Storage Appliance is the only hybrid cloud storage solution to pass VMware Ready certification. In addition, it’s also certified for Windows Server 2008.
To the users of vRanger, the new strategic initiative is expected to provide a one-step backup with automatic offsite data protection, without the need for tapes or a complex local storage infrastructure.
Company officials said that restores from vRanger occur seamlessly with the StorSimple storage tiering algorithm. Plus, since vRanger reads from the appliance, administrative intervention is not needed to restore data.
Using backup and cloud storage, the combined solution provides efficient disaster recovery. And if there is a side-wide disaster, it allows vRanger users to employ StorSimple’s CloudSnap technology, along with vRanger’s manifest files, restoring virtual machines directly to another site.
Earlier this month, Quest released a new version of LiteSpeed for SQL Server, which offers multi-instance backup management so DBAs can apply consistent backup strategies across the SQL Server environment.
