You’ve heard it all before – but apparently, either not enough or you’ve been hearing the wrong things, seeing how this year it was rather embarrassingly revealed that the majority of us don’t even know what cloud computing is. This year in particular has experienced big growth in the sector, and yet respondents of a recent survey revealed that they related the cloud to a number of things – ranging from the most obvious (weather) to the downright creepy (toilet paper).

Americans are pretty stupid when it comes to the cloud.” Despite this, the site reports that the survey also revealed 68 percent of Americans seeing cloud computing as the future to saving the economy. That’s a pretty big claim to make, and so it always seems appropriate to delve into what’s legitimate and what’s a sham when it comes to what you hear about the term itself.

There’s a lot to consider when discussing the cloud, and for someone who doesn’t regularly talk about the topic, it can quickly become complex. One thing that many may think, however, is that their security is compromised in the cloud. It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to understand that in order to be a successful cloud service provider, you must undoubtedly guarantee your customers’ data is secure.

“The security risks that exist in the cloud are no different than the ones that exist in-house,” this recent Cloud Tweaks article explains. “The greatest advantage when outsourcing to cloud is that providers are permanently focused on improving controls and procedures so that the data is always secure, while enterprises might neglect this focus from time to time.” The site also adds that most cloud computing providers offer their customers different levels of security protection, which ultimately enhances overall security.

In further disproof of this myth, the site separately mentions security as one of the growing trends in the cloud space, saying that we can “expect to see more secure security applications and techniques coming up,” as well as the growth of new encryption techniques, security protocols, and much more.

Another widely held rumor about the cloud is that users will lose all control of their data. While the common phrase, “out of sight, out of mind” applies to many situations, it certainly does not relate to the cloud. “Most people think that they will not be able to access their data whenever they need because they cannot see the actual physical SAN/Drive’s that the data is being stored on. With the cloud, the technology maintenance and support issues are in the hands of the cloud hosting provider, which means a high level of availability and data,” Cloud Tweaks reveals.

Last but not least is the apparent problem of performance in the cloud. This can or cannot be a myth; it all depends on if you properly deploy your cloud. “It is easier to add additional resources in a cloud environment, and if deployed correctly, those resources can be balanced and enable you to achieve a higher level of performance and redundancy,” Cloud Tweaks explains.
