Every month, Netcraft, a company that conducts monthly Internet research reports on the hosting industry, releases its report naming the most reliable hosting company sites. For October and November of 2012, cloud hosting expert Datapipe (News - Alert) topped the list as most reliable, and in December, the company maintained a slot in the top five most reliable sites as 2012 came to a close.

In the report, which measured the performance of about 40 leading hosting providers’ sites, the company elaborated that it saw the top 10 list primarily dominated by FreeBSD and Linux, with the only exception being Windows Specialists Server Intellect (News - Alert), who placed fourth. “Server Intellect, which now offers Windows Server 2012 as standard on all dedicated and cloud servers, was second last month and regularly features among the top ten most reliable hosting company sites,” the report noted.

This month, Netcraft also implemented a new performance measurement for candidate consideration at Webair’s (News - Alert) Amsterdam-based data center, which brings the total number of measurement points to 11.

“From a customer's point of view, the percentage of failed requests is more pertinent than outages on hosting companies' own sites, as this gives a pointer to reliability of routing, and this is why we choose to rank our table by fewest failed requests, rather than shortest periods of outage. In the event the number of failed requests are equal then sites are ranked by average connection times,” the company clarified in the report.

Topping December’s list was Serverstack, which responded to every request from Netcraft’s monitoring system. In second came Swishmail, and third was New York Internet.
