DVL Completes Data Center at Microsoft Technology Center in Philadelphia

By Anshu Shrivastava, TMCnet Contributor

Provider of data center infrastructure solutions, DVL Group has announced the completion of a data center at the Microsoft (News - Alert) Technology Center in Philadelphia, considered to be one of Microsoft’s newest and largest.

In addition to providing access to innovative technologies and world-class expertise, Microsoft Technology Centers (MTCs) also enable companies to envision, design, and deploy solutions that meet the existing and projected needs of their customers.

Located in the nearby suburb of Malvern, PA, the Philadelphia MTC is one of 24 such facilities worldwide.

Gary Hill, vice president of business development at DVL, said that the challenge with this project was implementing an infrastructure design that would support constant and continuous IT equipment changes while providing a functioning model of a world-class data center.

“This data center is located in the lobby behind floor-to-ceiling glass walls, so anyone who walks into the building sees it immediately, Hill said, adding that with IT and facilities managers from different industries visiting the MTC, “we wanted to create a data center that exceeds the technical needs of its users and visually demonstrates the concept of the Emerson Network Power’s (News - Alert) SmartAisle solution.”

Last year, Emerson Network Power’s Liebert business approached DVL with the opportunity to participate in the MTC project. The company collaborated with Microsoft and its Architectural consulting team to create a design that includes 16 Knurr DCM (News - Alert) racks, a 200kVA Liebert NX uninterruptible power system (UPS) and 6 Liebert CRV row-based cooling systems.

Company officials said that four of the racks incorporate the Liebert MPX power distribution strip that allows power receptacle exchanges without a shutdown.

Plus, the Liebert NForm monitoring system and the Avocent (News - Alert) DC Planner are also installed to provide effective data center infrastructure management (DCIM). This showcases proactive monitoring solutions that enable Microsoft to manage all the Emerson power and cooling products, said company officials.

The new MTC data center complements DVL’s Efficiency Lab located in Bristol, PA, and provides customers with an easy to access demonstration of DVL’s capabilities.
