Coming to a city near you: “A Morning with DCIM Experts: What Makes Sense for Your Data Center?”
In just a few days, Server Technology (News - Alert) – a provider of data center power distribution technologies – in collaboration with nlyte Software and RF Code will kick off a three-city series that has one overarching goal in mind – help data center professionals navigate the DCIM wave pool. The DCIM workshops kick off April 26 in Santa Clara, Calif., then head east to New York, N.Y., May 1, and finally wrap up down south in Houston, Tex., on May 8.
“DCIM has been emerging at a new solution category for the past several years,” Mark Harris, vice president of marketing for Server Technology and speaker at the series, told TMCnet about the goal of the workshop. “There are well over 200 vendors that identify themselves as supplying some portion of a DCIM solution. The DCIM series is intended to help prospective customers understand some of the ways in which components of DCIM can be implemented today.”
Server Technology is one company that certainly knows a thing or two about DCIM solutions as the company partners with several DICM providers. The company teams with DCIM providers as a way to help offer Server Technology customers the most complete and robust monitoring solutions. A DCIM solution offers many benefits including the fact that it provides the user with the “single pane of glass” view they want within their data center; that it can communicate with Server Technology’s CDUs and its competitors CDUs, and that users can input power and environmental information from the CDUs but not reinvent the wheel for discovery, inventory, configuration, upgrades and support of the STI CDUs which can all be done within SPM, according to company officials.
During the upcoming series, the three companies will provide an overview of the current state of the DCIM marketplace, as well as specifics regarding visual asset management, building a highly intelligent power infrastructure, and deploying granular environmental monitoring, according to Harris.
Touted as “the best half-day seminar you'll attend this year,” the series promises to leave attendees with a clear understanding of how to dive head first in the DCIM pool. In addition to presentations from Server Technology, RF Code, and nlyte Software, there will be a keynote from Bruce Taylor, from the Uptime Institute, and a continental breakfast and catered lunch.
When asked what message Server Technology hopes participants take away from the series, Harris said, “The attendee will better understand the many components of building a DCIM solution that delivers value to their specific needs, as well as a set of initial steps that can be taken today to begin the journey.”
In addition to learning about the ever changing DCIM landscape, data center managers also ought to be cognizant of the growing trend within the data center surrounding the application of many of the same principles used to manage any business unit.
“When the data center is being viewed as a business unit, many of the same types of metrics are used to determine effectiveness and efficiency,” Harris said. “Delivery of IT services are being viewed in the context of costs including cost per transaction. DCIM supports these business management goals.”
The first of the DCIM workshops kicks off next week on Thursday, April 26, from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Techmart in Santa Clara. For more information, click here.
