The drain on data center power is becoming a key priority for IT administrators and data center managers concerned with the impact on their budget. This trend is driving these professionals to consider new innovations for system-level control and cooling systems to optimize power usage.
A recent DatacenterDynamics report highlights a release from Cummins Power Generation, which includes new control at the system-level for the parallel operation of multiple sets of generators. Known as the DMC 1500 Paralleling System, this new data center power innovation combines PowerCommand microprocessor-based control technology with an interface based on graphical icons.
The system consists of a key integration between custom-engineered switchgear and the PowerCommand system-level digital master control. This seamless integration allows for the direct communication with the PowerCommand generator set, as well as the transfer switch controls.
The paralleling systems for optimal data center power consumption are available in both low and medium voltage applications. Systems with the DMC 1500 configuration are available for prime power usage at remote locations, ideal in situations where data center power is either unreliable or unavailable.
Power transitions can be open or closed with the DMC 1500 and can be optimized in both fast or gradual ramping modes. Parallel functions are included in the system to enable peak shaving, load add or load shed sequence control and base-loading. Four generators can be accommodated with the standard DMC 1500, and can be expanded to support up to eight generators.
Data center power control is enabled through a 15-inch touch-screen, used to control and monitor all key functions within the system, including diagnostics and configuration. Icons and menus are easily accessible through the graphical interface to maximize ease of navigation and usability.
All setup and service functions on this data center power solution are performed by a trained technician, including software and hardware upgrades, as well as diagnostics. Hardware servicing is simplified through the standardized layout, wiring harness and jack/plug connections.
Server Technology (News - Alert) is one company expanding the capabilities and expertise within the data center power environment. In fact, the company recently announced its efforts to spread the word on the importance of proper data center power management. The Server Technology Blog Squad are spearheading the promoting the company’s new efforts to spread the word.
“We have always had a blog, but it has been a little bit limited with the number of people writing,” Jenny Petty, integrated marketing specialist at Server Technology, told TMCnet. “We wanted to revamp it and get more people involved because we have so many smart, great people on staff. We want to let them have an outlet where they can share things they are learning about the industry or opinions they have about trends going on.”
As Server Technology continues to develop core innovations in the data center power space, they will also continue to invite feedback and engagement from customers with real-world challenges and solutions in a data-hungry environment.
