A Power Distribution Unit (PDU) is a multiple outlet power strip designed to deliver conditioned power to mission-critical networking, server or telecom equipment. In a networking environment, devices need to be powered continuously, either from a whole site generator or rack-mounted UPS power source, and since many networking devices in use today are fitted with dual redundant power inputs, the total plug count can approach 80 or more—with many requiring two power sources to further mitigate the risk of power failure. PDUs are commonly built for permanent placement inside rack enclosures and generally functions as the entry point for power into a rack.
All rackmount PDUs, no matter the complexity of the unit, can help reduce downtime because they provide reliable power distribution.
Server Technology (News - Alert), a provider of quality rackmount power distribution and monitoring solutions that help manage power capacity, reduce downtime and improve energy efficiency, offers a variety of PDU products. In the first of a series that explores the PDUs Server Technology offers, we’ll take a look at its basic PDUs.
“Our Basic units provide that reliable power distribution for all of the devices in the equipment cabinet, from 2kW-6kW per cabinet,” said Julie Brown, marketing manager, Server Technology. “Basic PDUs do not help reduce power capacity though – that takes a more intelligent PDU, which will be covered in future editions of this series on PDU families & what each kind can do. “
The Sentry basic cabinet PDU product family provides a simple solution where reliable power distribution for equipment racks and other data center applications is needed. It offers different input and output connections to distribute 110V, 208V or 230V power and a 20 or 30-Amp power input feed.
“Basic PDUs are just that – basic. They provide two functions: Power distribution and branch circuit protection, (overcurrent protection),” explained Brown. “Server Technology manufacturers hundreds of different kinds of Basic PDUs – all designed with the quality, reliability and performance that Server Technology is known for. All of our units are 100 percent Product Performance testing, so before we ship them, they put to a 10 step test in the Server Technology Power Lab, ensuring the highest quality and reliability available.”
Basic PDUs are simply a better designed, more reliable “power strip.” They provide clean, reliable power distribution and that branch circuit protection. Any company, small or large, data center or regular business, would benefit from using Server Technology’s Basic PDUs. It will give them the reliability in power distribution and the protection that they’re looking for.
The Sentry Basic cabinet power distribution unit meets the criteria of Branch Circuit Protection by providing overcurrent protection with UL-listed Bussman SC fuses for each branch circuit. Branch circuit protection is accomplished via UL-listed Bussman SC fuses for compliance with UL/CSA/EN 60950-1 standards.
