A power distribution unit (PDU) distributes electric power to networking technology and racks of computers in data centers. But what if direct access to the PDU is not available, such as when it is located in an inconvenient or inaccessible setting, such as in a hot aisle? Or maybe it is found behind locked cabinets and the key is not readily available. How can power use be followed?
Server Technology (News - Alert) offers a mobile monitoring solution that can provide the needed information: its ST Eye Bluetooth application with compatible hardware. By using the application, users can get extensive data from a rack PDU.
If a PIPS PDU is Bluetooth capable, the ST Eye module can be turned on by a touch of the discovery button or by scanning a QR code with a mobile device application. It can provide information on a system, and give in-feed, outlet and sensor data. It also relates power and environmental information.
It works through a secure Web interface and gives information from the PDU without connecting physically to the computer.
Just use a mobile device to connect to the wireless network, and the app will provide access to the PDU, thus providing users with the needed information. Users will find they will get PIPS and POPS measurements on power use and related data.
There are many times such data are important. For instance, someone may be installing new IT gear into a rack. He or she has to make sure they do not overload the PDU power circuit. They need to see the power draw of individual power supplies or devices as they come online. The amperage draw per phase can be found out from the LEDs on the PDU.
The application provides such information on power as amperage, voltage and power factor. It also provides temperature and humidity measurements, and it will let the user see the PDU’s IP address and serial number. The technology also features a large LCD screen so data are easy to read.
One added advantage is that the application can be downloaded for free, and is easy to install.
The product comes from Server Technology, which makes rack-mount power distribution and monitoring solutions. The solutions help to manage power capacity, reduce downtime and improve energy efficiency. That means there will be lower costs of operation, as well as improved reliability and environmentally-friendly technology.
