Joe Skorjanec, a product manager at Eaton (News - Alert), where he handles enclosure power distribution for IT and data center applications, said in an article appearing on the Business Solutions website, that a new line of “advanced rack” PDUs, which have monitoring and management strengths, provide data centers “comprehensive functionality that addresses their most pressing operational needs.”
One benefit is how the PDUs lower administrative costs. Rack PDUs will actually let data center employees focus on “strategic tasks,” Skorjanec said. By color-coding branch circuits to associate with color coding outlets, troubleshooting will take less time and load balancing will be simpler, as well. In addition, low-profile circuit breakers or widths optimized for side mounting will also reduce the time needed to service a rack if there is a component failure.
Another benefit relates to the ease of installation of rack PDUs. They lessen start-up costs. Using the same vendor for rack PDUs and rack enclosures means there will be compatibility, the report said. An aluminum chassis is also easier to install, costs less to ship and handles heat and electrical ground conductivity better than other options, the report adds.
And Skorjanec said that advanced PDUs lead to improved agility, given that the same vendor offers the rack and the PDU. Features on the rack PDU can lead to reduction in installation costs by 75 percent — especially when it comes to using fewer network ports, which improves agility. In addition, the report said that a rack PDU, which has IEC (News - Alert) plug retention, lessens the risk of “dislodgment of a plug and can greatly enhance reliability,” Skorjanec said. He further suggests that using integrated IEC outlet grips lowers the total cost of ownership and leads to more reliability.
So advanced PDUs have many benefits, such as lower administrative costs, simpler installation and improved agility, the report concludes.
When considering PDUs, manufacturer Server Technology (News - Alert) provides Sentry PDUs, with rack-mount power distribution and monitoring solutions. They manage power capacity, lessen downtime and improve energy efficiency. This year, the company has introduced color-coded PDUs, as well.
Not only do they keep customers better organized and provide more efficient management in data centers, they help users find data center power distribution pathways quickly, Server Technology said.
