RedSky E911 Bridges the Gap Between the Emergency and the Accurate Response

By Susan J. Campbell, TMCnet Contributing Editor

No one ever wants to dial 911, but when they do, it’s one of the most important phone calls they ever make. Accordingly, it’s vitally important that this service works, as there could very well be a life at stake. With the rapid advancements in mobility and telecommunications, the demand for E911 continues to grow.

According to this RedSky (News - Alert) piece, 911 phone glitches have led to death. One man, actually a doctor in Rockville, Maryland was able to report only part of his address as he made his 911 call complaining of chest pains. The problem was that the phone system only showed the main number and not the location of the extensions. Responders unfortunately were left with the impression that there was no emergency, because the address they responded to was not where the dying man was located.

E911, or enhanced 911, is helping first responders get to the emergency in places that have a complex layout requiring a more advanced and complex phone system. An E911 system will point an emergency response in the precise location – right down to the cubicle of the actual call. If the safety of their employees isn’t enough to spur an enterprise into taking on an E911 system, the fines will.

Businesses are starting to find themselves in court facing fines and lawsuits due to their inability to provide their employees with an emergency response system that is reliable and accurate. An E911 system can address these gaps, as long as decision makers know their options.

There isn’t much of a barrier for companies of all sizes seeking a reliable E911 system; they’re affordable. Some reports show that for around two-thirds of companies that invest in an E911 system, the return is two to three dollars for every dollar spent, but it isn’t as simple as just selecting to implement E911. Every company has different needs, and they need to select the E911 solution that fits their environment in a price range that will fit their budget.
