911-Inc., Intrado Conduct Next-Gen E911 Demo

By Anshu Shrivastava, TMCnet Contributor

911-Inc. has announced that its next generation software, QuickResponse – an i3 compliant software package that allows easy management of voice, data and multimedia streams including instant message, text, photo and video – works within Intrado’s (News - Alert) Intelligent Emergency Network, as per a recent demonstration.

For the demo, the companies pursued an assistance interface standard that’s being developed by the Emergency Services Interconnection Forum of the Association of Telecommunications Industry Solutions.

With the technology, emergency dispatch centers can receive 9-1-1 calls using SIP protocol over the Internet, replacing the old CAMA that phone trunks long have used, said company officials.

Allen Amis, CEO at 911-Inc., said that the ability to receive emergency calls over IP is one of the first steps in migrating to a next-generation solution.

“911-Inc. is at the forefront of testing these new technologies with vendors, proving our commitment to be ready for next generation 9-1-1 data and networks when they are available in any market,” Amis said.

Currently, public safety answering points receive calls via an analog or digital phone line and retrieve ALI location information via a separate modem. However, industry experts believe that in the future – when all voice and data comes to the dispatch center over highly secure IP networks – the 9-1-1 call taker will have instant access to expanded data and location information. Enhanced 911 – or E911 – is a big part of that process. The technology uses location-based services to pinpoint the whereabouts of distressed callers.

“This is just one of the many benefits of next generation call handling,” said Greg Furman, vice president of sales and marketing at 911-Inc, adding that answering the call and instantly receiving critical location information can save precious time, which can provide better protection of first responders and citizens.

In related news, in November, 911-Inc. announced that the new University Police emergency dispatch center at California State University, Fullerton, is receiving local area 9-1-1 calls using its QuickLink call processing solution.
