Objective Interface Systems (OIS), a provider of high-performance communications middleware solutions, announced that its ORBexpress product has extended support to Wind River's (News
- Alert) VxWorks 6.9 real-time operating system (RTOS) with Symmetric Multiprocessing (SMP) on embedded multi-core platforms.
By implementing ORBexpress on VxWorks 6.9 RTOS, developers can seamlessly move their application to a multicore environment without rewriting their code, according to company officials. ORBexpress supports VxWorks 6.9 on a variety of processors including the x86, ARM (News
- Alert), PowerPC, and other processor families.
Wind River 's VxWorks 6.9 features multi-core support capabilities within the operating system, network stack, and development tools, so it delivers an easy migration path to multicore technology for embedded software developers. The platform offers greater multicore processing performance in symmetric multiprocessing and asymmetrical multiprocessing configurations.
Featuring multi-threaded communications architecture, ORBexpress is designed for real-time and embedded systems. The ORBexpress communications software fully supports multi-threading for achieving concurrency by making more efficient use of shared resources.
"Multicore is the new frontier of embedded systems and a majority of our customers indicate that future projects may use a multicore architecture,” said Joe Jacob, senior vice president at OIS, in a statement. “VxWorks 6.9 multi-core support provides an excellent foundation for the built-in multicore architecture of ORBexpress."
ORBexpress’ support for VxWorks 6.9 is a significant step in the ORBexpress platform for embedded developers around the world, according to Jacob. This standards-based communications infrastructure will relieve developers from rewriting their application codes to achieve mult-icore capabilities.
"OIS’ ORBexpress product, with its multi-threading features, provides an ideal framework for inter-process communications in a VxWorks multicore environment," said Warren Kurisu, vice president of VxWorks product management at Wind River, in a statement. "By using ORBexpress communications architecture, developers can shorten their development time while using a low-latency, secure, high-performance communication framework."
Wind River is a wholly owned subsidiary of Intel (News
