True 21st Century Fax

By Mae Kowalke, TMCnet Contributor

The term “ True 21st Century Fax” defines a very small segment of the fax server industry that utilizes the latest technology. Depending on how the term is defined, this may include Dialogic’s (News - Alert) SR140 Fax-over-IP technology or the latest offerings from Microsoft (News - Alert).

FaxCore is one company that has worked hard to keep pace with technology changes without sacrificing functionality or affordability. The most recent version of FaxCore (News - Alert) offers a new generation of network fax designed to move information and power a business. The company believes that what enterprises really need is not a communications management system that promises to make the paperless office a reality, but rather a fax-centric solution that focuses on speeding up critical fax traffic while making it easier to manage faxing.

FaxCore offers two version of its fax over IP solution: Standard and Enterprise. Both editions include a variety of standard features in the core server license. These are:

--Built on Microsoft .NET (News - Alert) Framework
--Inbound PDF formatting
--Integration with Exchange standard (all versions)
--Runs on Microsoft Server 2003
--SQL Server 2005 or SQL Exprress
--SDK Standard  — Web Services
--SharePoint Server 2007 Native Integration
--Supports Active Directory
--Web-based ( IIS 6.0 Internet Explorer 6.0 )

All of the features in the list above can be characterized as 21st Century technology. FaxCore includes all these as standard features in order to make its fax over IP solution truly a “21st Century Fax” offering. FaxCore also supports legacy technology to provide customers with a migration path to the future. Competitors may offer some degree of these features, FaxCore Senior Vice President Max Schroeder (News - Alert) told TMCnet, but will charge extra for many of the options.

Also, Schroeder said, even then most will not be True 21st Century features and will require an Exchange Connector, a fat client for the Web browser, a SharePoint Connector and definitely will not be built on a .NET Framework

“These are not the type of feature implementations preferred by IT managers,” Schroeder said. “IT managers prefer a version independent Exchange integration without a connector, an IIS Web browser interface and native SharePoint integration as these are a True 21st Century Fax implementation.”
