Balancing Traditional and State-of-the-Art Communications Skills

By Max Schroeder, SVP

Fax-over-IP (FoIP) has received a lot of attention as a critical component of a global messaging solution which is why FaxCore (News - Alert) helped pioneer this technology early in the century. Certainly the speed and convenience of today’s messaging and video conferencing technologies has also provided senior executives with a great set of management tools for “remote global meetings.” Theoretically, this should lead to reduced travel for management but that is not necessarily so. These same tools have also increased the available business opportunities and growth for companies seeking to expand their global operations. Some things change and some things will always remain the same. The best electronic conferencing technology cannot replace meeting business partners face-to-face and having the opportunity to discuss future plans over dinner.

Tom Linhard, FaxCore’s president, definitely believes in this approach and has the travel record to prove it. He is a Diamond-level member of two hotel chains and a million-mile flyer at the world’s largest airline. That fact was recently recognized by Global Traveler Magazine in appointing Tom as a charter member of its Globility Board. The publisher and CEO, Francis X. Gallagher, said the magazine “Wanted a group of top international travelers who read and know Global Traveler to offer insight into what they expect from an airline, hotel or anything related to travel. He added “We wanted a direct-from-the-source, true and clean sense of their preferences and dislikes.”

Mr. Gallagher’s position sounds very similar to that of Mr. Linhard, who has often said, “To build a global operation you have to be willing to personally commit to going global yourself. Images on a computer screen just do not provide the true feel of a country or its business community. Sometimes you just have to be there in person.”

Some people seem to think technology vendors are seeking to replace traditional human interactions like some wild movie plot but the opposite is true. Certainly, FaxCore, Inc. has fully embraced global messaging and communications technologies as evidenced by the converged-IP features built into its award-winning FaxCore fax server applications. However, these tools are designed to enhance and expand the global reach of its customers not eliminate or limit traditional human communications. The true winning combination for building a global operation is the effective use of modern communications tools balanced with live in-country experiences. This provides for the ability to open opportunities more effectively and efficiently manage travel time and in-country business meetings.

Of course, if you are looking to do more global travel, you may want to ask Tom Linhard for some restaurant recommendations in Bangkok, Tokyo, London and Singapore. You can always fax ahead with your reservations.

Max Schroeder (News - Alert) is senior vice president of FaxCore Inc. (www.faxcore.com) and managing director of the DPCF.
