Neither Snow nor Rain: FoIP as an Alternative to the Mailman

By Blaise McNamee, Web Editor

With the United States Postal Service facing ever tighter budgetary restrictions, the ominous shadow of weekend service cuts and rising postage prices continues to grow. Is this the signal your business has been waiting for to make the switch to Fax over IP (FoIP)?

By sending fax information over the IP networks, FoIP can dramatically reduce the costs associated with business to business correspondence. Regardless of USPS (News - Alert) prices, Fax over IP already boasts substantial cost savings by contributing to a fully converged unified communications (UC) system and eliminating the need for traditional fax boards.  That being said, utilizing FoIP as an alternative to traditional mailing services can provide an even greater level of cost savings for your business.

For example, in the early 1990s, a postal strike in Canada threatened to ruin a financial company who relied on the service to distribute financial statements, invoices, and other mission critical material. Pressed for time, the company immediately reached out to Max Schroder, senior vice president of FaxCore Inc., a Denver-based provider of Fax over IP solutions. They purchased a fax solution to handle all of their critical correspondence during the strike, which was up and running in just a few days.

In the end, Schroder noted, “The strike was actually a very fortuitous event. The analysis showed that faxing was much less expensive that using the postal service. Basically, a two- to three-page document only cost pennies and a mailed document could be as much as a $1 when factoring in processing postage. Plus, fax has the added benefit of providing proof of delivery. The ROI was excellent and we will not revert to using the postal service.”

Twenty years later, postage prices have skyrocketed, while the cost of faxing over IP networks is lower than ever. Moreover, recent developments out of the SIP Forum (News - Alert) in the form of IETF RFC 6913 promise for increased FoIP reliability and performance in the months and years ahead.

Thus, the time to change is now, evinced by the increasing number of phone calls to FaxCore (News - Alert) in recent years. To learn more about how a FoIP solution can benefit your business, visit the FaxCore website.
