About 928,000 HP fax 1040 and 1050 machines have been recalled in the U.S.
240,000 machines have also been recalled in Canada and Mexico, as per an agreement between the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission and HP.
Both organizations have advised the consumers to stop using recalled products immediately unless otherwise instructed.
The importer of these China manufactured machines has also announced that it is illegal to resell or attempt to resell a recalled consumer product.
It may be very dangerous not to pay heed to this advice as the fax machine can overheat due to an internal electrical component failure.
This overheating may cause fire and burn hazards repeating history of similar episodes in the U.S. and in Canada
Reiterating the importance of this announcement, Hewlett-Packard (News
- Alert) notes seven reports of fax machines overheating and catching fire.
These episodes resulted in property damage and a minor burn injury to a consumer's finger. It is thus important for users to immediately stop using the recalled fax machines.
It is advisable for users to disconnect these machines from the electrical outlet and contact HP for a rebate on the purchase of an authorized replacement HP fax machine or a partial rebate of certain HP ink jet printers.
It is easy to identify the dark gray HP Fax 1040 and 1050 models because the HP logo and the model number are printed on the front of the fax machine.
