Fax machines might seem like a relic of the late 20th Century, but even in the days of e-mail and PDF files, users still occasionally have to deal with them – especially in business. One iPhone (News - Alert) application, however, allows users to send faxes.
MaxEmail Fax takes advantage of the high-resolution cameras that iOS devices have to turn them into fax machines.
“The overall process is a little slower than just feeding pages into a machine, but you can't beat the convenience of being able to send faxes anytime, anywhere,” Rick Broida wrote for PCWorld.
Users can scan documents using their device's camera, but they can also link MaxEmail Fax to their DropBox, Google (News
- Alert) Docs and WebDav accounts, letting them send those documents as faxes as well.
Using the app is simple: scan the document or select it from one of the services available, add the recipient and the phone number and send it off.
“We are very excited to offer our customers the ability to send and receive faxes from their iPhones, anywhere they are,” said Jim Siwek, VP of Online Engineering for MaxEmail. “Using our MaxEmail Fax iPhone app, users can just snap a picture of a document and fax it with a few taps of the finger. No scanners, no fax machines and no phone lines needed. This new iPhone app truly makes mobile faxing a reality.”
The app has a free 30-day trial that lets users send up to three faxes with a maximum length of 10 pages. After that, a variety of plans is available.
The cheapest plan is $24 a year, with an activation fee of $10 on top of that. Users get a number that lets other people send faxes to them. On the basic plan, users receive 100 inbound faxes each month. Faxes can also be stored for 30 days online.
Sending a fax costs 10 cents per page, or five cents for 30 seconds of faxing time. “If you're looking for an easy and affordable way to put a fax machine in your pocket, this app is definitely worth a look.
