Report Focuses on HD Voice Opportunities and Growth in Global Market

By Susan J. Campbell, TMCnet Contributing Editor

Significant growth is expected in HD voice over the next three years, according to HD Voice 2011, a report published by HD Voice News in partnership with TMC. This growth is expected to be the result of Tier 1 service providers, such as Comcast, France Telecom, Cincinnati Bell and Verizon (News - Alert) offering technology to business, residential and wireless customers.

In fact, based on this report, which pulls from two years of accumulated research and dialogue with service providers, network equipment vendors and OEM suppliers, 17 mobile carriers have either operational service already in place, or have announced plans to expand HD voice to markets in Asia, Europe, the Middle East and North America.

"Anyone involved in telephony who is not tracking HD voice better wake up fast," said Doug Mohney, Editor-in-Chief of HD Voice News, in a statement. "Verizon Business is going to make HD voice and video announcements in the coming weeks and Verizon Wireless (News - Alert) will deliver HD voice in 2012 when they turn on VoLTE. Comcast is a good bet for the first Tier 1 voice provider to deploy residential wideband service if they can get the right CPE out of its suppliers."

This report documents the global move to wideband voice and how a wide ecosystem of products and services is delivering HD voice in the real world today. The report also discusses the trends for the proliferation of HD voice in markets throughout the world, and the obstacles that still remain for ubiquitous wideband availability.

"The biggest single headache for HD voice — and video for that matter — is the need for Tier 1 SIP peering," said Mohney. "It’s a Layer 8 and 9 problem, money and politics, not technology. We don’t need more stinking technology, we need service providers to wake up and start making arrangements before the FCC (News - Alert) and Congress decides to ‘fix things’ themselves. Hopefully the April SIPNOC event will start breaking this critical bottleneck."

The “Critical Mass” report found that DECT (News - Alert) and CAT-iq 2.0 will play a significant role in enabling HD voice for residential service; that Tier 1 providers are beginning to address the need for ubiquitous SIP peering to enable HD voice and video, although money and politics continue to be obstacles; the cable industry is ready to make the large service deployments for HD voice; and Verizon is emerging as a key leader for HD voice in the business and wireless spaces.
