Study Highlights Importance of IPX for Next Gen Wireless

By David Sims, TMCnet Contributing Editor

A new study from Sybase (News - Alert) 365 finds that mobile operators around the globe consider IP Exchange (IPX) an essential ingredient for next generation wireless services.

The study, titled “IPX: New Interconnect Strategies for Operators,” is geared toward global operators working in HD voice, mobile messaging and mobile commerce services.

“Operators are excited by the potential to cut costs by reducing the number of connections needed," said William Dudley, Group Director of Operator Services Products at Sybase 365 (News - Alert).

The survey found the majority of operators surveyed, 63.5 percent, “plan to deploy IPX over the next one to three years.” Sybase officials interpret this as proving “the firm grasp of the benefits and opportunities for IPX that operators have, as well as growing demand for an infrastructure that can securely and reliably connect multiple operators with over-the-top (OTT) services, enterprises and cloud services.”

Some other areas covered by the survey:

IPX opportunities. The study found that operators will look to IPX service providers to offer multimedia services, Voice over IP (VoIP) and HD voice, and are most interested in bringing high-bandwidth or multimedia services into their service offerings, followed by social networks and financial services.

IPX deployment. A commanding eight out of 10 operators surveyed who have deployed IPX use it for voice services, with 60 percent using it for data roaming, citing ease of use and scalability as major benefits. Some say they use IPX for inter-MSC connectivity, signalling, enhanced GRX, MPLS, IP transit, L3 VPN, BGP peering, CDN and IP data.

Key drivers. Long Term Evolution is expected to be a major driver of IPX deployments, as the study found that many 3G operators are committed to LTE (News - Alert) and are planning to start rolling LTE out in two to three years.

In June, TMCnet had the news that Sybase appointed John J. Sims as president of its mobile services business Sybase 365.

John Chen, chairman and CEO of Sybase, said Sims brings “a wealth of experience in the mobile market, and will focus on extending the global leadership of Sybase 365 in messaging and mobile commerce services." From 2001 to 2010, Sims served as CEO of 724 Solutions (News - Alert), a company that engages in the design, development, marketing and support of mobile internet/mobile broadband products for use by mobile network operators worldwide.
