Mobile VoIP, the ability to use a cell phone’s Wi-Fi connection to make free or low cost call, has become a preferred mode of communication in many countries – particularly in areas like the Middle East and Asia, where bandwidth issues and concerns over blocked communications are common.

Here in the U.S., concerns over user interfaces, network support for data demands and usability, once limited uptake. Today, however, the market for mobile VoIP is picking up steam and is expected to reach $32.2 billion by 2013.

“Things were a lot different just a few years back,” Craig Span, REVE Systems’ regional head of sales in North America said during video interview with TMC (News - Alert). “There was a resistance to mobile VoIP among carriers, as many of them believed it was a cannibalization.”

Now, consumers are seeing the benefit in Mobile VoIP’s ability as it allows anytime, anywhere access, the convergence of devices, cost savings and the economics of VoIP combined with mobility.

Also driving this uptick is the increased usage of smartphone devices by users and the increased Wi-Fi coverage areas including many new 3G and 4G implementations. In fact, according to research from IHS (News - Alert) iSuppli, more than 60 percent of mobile users will switch to smartphones by 2016.
