New Global Telecom Releases Version 4.0 of 6DegreesIP, Adds Trunk Replacement Service

By Mae Kowalke, TMCnet Senior Editor

Wholesale hosted VoIP provider New Global Telecom (NGT) announced today release 4.0 of its 6DegreesIP product suite.

Eric Smith, Senior Product Development Manager at NGT, told TMCnet.com that the primary new feature of release 4.0 is the addition of trunk replacement service.

The new functionality allows 6DegreesIP users to connect their traditional PBX system to NGT’s platform. This is achieved by emulating an analog PRI line, which can be used by the 6DegreesIP platform to deliver both traditional and enhanced phone services.

From the end-user’s perspective, Smith said, trunk replacement means “that, instead of having to purchase an IP phone to use our service, you can now blend the services inherent in a PBX with enhanced softswitch services.”

Trunk replacement extends the life of existing PBX systems, Smith said, since it makes possible a hybrid environment using both TDM and IP technologies.

Now, NGT’s end-user customers can keep all the standard voice services they’re accustomed to—such as call forwarding and call transfer—and also add modern, productivity-enhancing features as well.

Some of those features are:
  • Ability to make calls using the system from any phone, in or out of the office
  • Web portal with click-to-call service
  • Ability to have incoming calls simultaneously ring on multiple phones
  • Click-to-call functionality within Microsoft (News - Alert) Outlook
The addition of trunk replacement to 6DegreesIP is also presents an additional revenue source for more than 50 service providers worldwide who deliver 6DegreesIP to upwards of 65,000 end-users, Smith said.

But trunk replacement service isn’t the only improvement available with release 4.0. Smith told TMCnet that the new version also incorporates the following features:
  • A lookup tool that lets users and service providers check the availability of E911 coverage for a given phone number.

  • Hoteling, which allows users to access their company phone system—and use it to place calls—from any phone.

  • Push-to-talk functionality that allows users to specify who else can contact them by intercom.
6DegreesIP was introduced in 2004, Smith told TMCnet, and since then it has gone through about 10 releases as NGT continually added new features. The most recent release prior to this one was version 3.6 in late 2005, which introduced the E911 SafeCall feature.

Smith added that 6DegreesIP was named after the social concept of six degrees of separation. The company chose the name to communicate that their services make it easy for companies to become part of the VoIP community.

With trunk replacement service and the other new features of release 4.0, that’s truer than ever.
