KVH (News - Alert) recently announced that it will be delivering TracPhone V7-IP systems to Virginia-based engineering products and services provider Global Technical Systems (GTS).

The V7-IP systems will support a 10-year indefinite-delivery/indefinite-quantity (IDIQ) contract for ULAD (ultra-light aircraft detection) platforms that will be used in U.S. Customs and Border Protection programs. The company also has the option of providing GTS with 144 systems over a five-year ordering period of this IDIQ contract.

For this project, KVH is also providing its mini-VSAT Broadband service that will be used to transmit data from a mobile platform housing surveillance radar and other sensors for homeland security initiatives.

"Our mini-VSAT Broadband network is fully licensed by the FCC (News - Alert) to provide seamless coverage across North America, ensuring that communications are always available in remote locations," said Dan Conway, executive vice president of KVH's guidance and stabilization group.

TracPhone V7-IP features an antenna that is about 24 inches in diameter and boasts 1 Mbps upload as well as 2 Mbps download speed.

The compact, rugged solution includes spread spectrum technology that enables the system to deliver VSAT service using these antennas, said to be 85-percent smaller and lighter than other similar solutions available in the market.

Also included in TracPhone V7-IP is an Integrated CommBox Modem (ICM) that controls the one-to-one connectivity of the mini-VSAT Broadband service, including fast, low latency data connections and high-quality VoIP phone service. It also provides network management functionality, and assured file delivery.

"The TracPhone V7-IP is perfect for the ULAD platform because it offers outstanding performance in on-the-move and on-the-halt applications, transmitting data with the agility needed to support any number of operational scenarios," said Conway.
