Phone Vendor snom Introduces New Device, Expands into SMB IP PBX Space

By Paula Bernier, Executive Editor, TMC

ITEXPO was the forum at which snom technology AG unveiled its new snom 821 desktop phone. The device is an evolution of snom’s 820 phone, which it will replace, according to Tommy Lee (News - Alert), snom channel manager. Lee adds that snom is also readying a PBX solution for the SMB market.

What’s important to know about the 821 model is that it includes a gigabit switch, allowing added support of new business applications. Lee notes that the 820 has a 10/100 port for the PC.

The new snom 821 desktop phone, available in both gray and black, also includes a PA1 public announcement system feature.

Lee adds that new phone retains its SIP heritage, but at the same time works with Microsoft (News - Alert) OCS. That adds a lot of value for clients who want a single phone that can bridge both solutions, he says.

The new product, which became available about a month ago, is list priced at $279.

On a separate note, Lee says that snom today in Europe unveiled an IP PBX (News - Alert) solution for small and medium business applications. The product, called snom ONE, is actually based on a solution snom’s CEO developed a decade ago and was being sold by a company called PBXnSIP, which snom is now bringing back under its wing, Lee says.

The snom PBX product will soon make its debut in the U.S. he adds. The idea of snom ONE is to offer SMBs a very simple, software-based solution that is optimized to work with phones from snom, which has traditionally been a phone vendor.

The company will offer at no charge a model that handles up to 10 lines. It will also sell versions of snom ONE that can support up to 20 or up to 150 users, he says.

The introduction of snom ONE, adds Lee, will allow snom to offer customers end-to-end solutions.
