snom 820 Takes Center Stage of VoIP Portfolio

By Tim Gray, TMCnet Web Editor

After launching its latest line of business VoIP phones, snom Technology AG has stepped up in class combining high-end telephony with an enhanced design and increased features with its snom 820.

In fact, the German-based company is so taken with its new model, it created a movie and dubbed the new line “The 8 Experience.”

The snom 820 combines the latest technology and established snom features, including its large high-resolution TFT color display (3.5”, 320 x 240 pixels) that offers a clear depiction of call lists, phone directories and caller information via the integrated XML browser.

“In this series we want to merge two of the main requirements of modern telephony in one device: mature VoIP technology and design in a class of its own,” the company said.
In fact, the latest wideband enhanced technology used in the handset, according to snom, captures more than double of the spectrum of voice frequencies of standard phones.

This means the audio quality is high; being compared to the sound coming from an FM radio. On speakerphone a Class D amplifier suppresses interference noise creating a high power conversion efficiency combined with increase sound quality.

The snom portfolio can now be purchased on the GSA list thru a three-way deal that includes snom partner ABP (News - Alert) Technology and contract holder Technical Communities Inc. and is expected to extend snom’s reach even further into a considerable government market. The list is managed by the federal government in an effort to streamline the purchasing process of government agencies and employees.

The deal is significant for the German-based snom because it allows the company to work with agencies across the country as a “trusted vendor” with special and approved pricing. Essentially, the GSA (News - Alert) IT Schedule 70 contract provides a streamlined vehicle for federal, state and local agencies to purchase snom’s comprehensive portfolio of VoIP phones.

As part of that portfolio, the new snom 820 WLAN enables users to install the phone in any surrounding and can be used in versatile environments from Power over plug with WLAN to Power over Ethernet (PoE).

Moreover, the snom 820 offers increased security features like secure VPN, TLS and SRTP. These are an integral part of the 820s firmware in an effort to make sure that the data of customers is secure and to inhibit any hacking of copy data.

In addition, the snom 820 also offers a wide range of functions particularly relevant to the business world such as 5-way conferencing, multiple ringtones, and up to twelve different SIP identities. “This is the meaning of independence in every day work. To guarantee maximum comfort the user interface of the snom 820 is designed especially for a clear and intuitive operation,” according to the company.

As TMCnet previously reported, in an extended effort to bring International DID capability to the wider VoIP market, snom recently teamed with pbxnsip (News - Alert) and DIDX to provide interoperability testing between the three companies' products and services.

In a joint effort that was completed in less than 24 hours, the trio managed to demonstrate the relative ease in which testing and certification can be completed.

“This testing and certification shows the ease of use and interoperability between standards-based SIP components and how service providers can quickly provision and deploy DID/DDI services worldwide,” said Paul Jamieson, director of Sales at pbxnsip, a provider of VoIP applications for ITSPs, call centers, telephony, and hospitality.
