By Rajani Baburajan, TMCnet Contributor

Global enterprise softphones market is expected to touch $217.2 million by 2017, according to Global Industry Analysts.

Enterprise mobility and workforce virtualization are the important growth drivers for the growth in enterprise softphones market.

Worldwide adoption of VoIP networks and improving performance fundamentals of VoIP networks are pushing the business case for enterprise softphone, according to a press statement.

Convergence (News - Alert) of data, video and voice networks and commercialization of wide area wireless broadband networks are powering the adoption of VoIP networks globally, Global Industry Analysts said in its research report titled “Enterprise Softphones: A Global Strategic Business Report.”

In North America, residential VoIP market is experiencing strong growth mainly driven by users’ interest in compelling offers made by service providers.

The U.S. represents the largest regional market. Asia-Pacific is the fastest growing regional market with volume sales and revenue growing at a CAGR of more than 19 percent and 13 percent, respectively, over the analysis period.

Major players in the marketplace include Avaya, Broadview Networks, Cisco Systems (News - Alert), CounterPath Corporation, Mirial, among others.

For smaller companies, cost benefits make softphone an attractive telephony solution. The growing popularity and adoption of hosted VoIP services are also driving the demand for softphones.

As increased number of SMBs begins to recognize the advantage of IP telephony and as older telephony platforms reach the end of their lifecycle, IP adoption is expected to continue gaining momentum, the report said.

RecentlyBluenote Networks noted that before widespread adoption of softphones in the enterprise can occur, the issues of usability and usefulness as a desk phone replacement must be addressed.

Softphones should seamlessly integrate with and provide instant communication from enterprise applications and directories, according to Bluenote Networks.
