Least Cost Routing Trends: Future of IP Networks Rests with Federnet 2.0

By Ed Silverstein, TMCnet Contributor

In 2005, Sumant Sharma, the Asia-Pacific managing director of Acme Packet (News - Alert), announced that the future interactive communications network will be called the “Federnet.”

Since then managed service provider networks interconnected to make the Federnet, according to news reports. The Federnet is made up of individual Internet Protocol (IP) networks connected through session border controllers.

The Federnet also provides transport services between federated enterprises and subscriber groups, explained a recent blog post from Acme Packet.

Under the Federnet, each participating network authenticates its subscribers, attached networks and ability to connect to them, Acme Packet adds. It also lets service providers and enterprises to interconnect.

Now, network transport options are increasing. A Federnet 2.0 is on the horizon. It will let over-the-top providers and their subscribers use managed service provider networks, Acme Packet said.

It comes as 3G, LTE (News - Alert) and Wi-Fi access to all services and applications from all devices is demanded by individual and enterprise users. As a result, there needs to be adequate backhaul networks and high-bandwidth wired aggregation.

Now, people trust the public switched telephone network (PSTN) for delivering calls and faxes. But IP communications networks will be trusted with users’ private information, belief in reliable communications and privacy, and information that reveals users’ identities. Controls at IP borders will lead to trusted networks. Also, there are more options for communication service choices and applications.

Acme Packet has identified six trends in this new environment: Identity and privacy are vital; there is unified service for anyone, anywhere and anytime; there are more service provider choices; cloud services are dominant; there will be more options for network transport; and mobile access is dominant.
