Brazoria, one of the earliest telephone companies in Texas, has adapted metro Ethernet company Positron’s Aktino (News - Alert) Flexstream solution to offer 45 Mbps, scalable to 100 Mbps, services to North America’s biggest Tier 1 wireless provider.

Brazoria officials said that they were looking for a robust solution that provided a full DS3 or 45 Mbps of bandwidth that could seamlessly scale to 100 Mbps on the same equipment. This requirement was matched by Positron’s AK355 solution because of its industry-leading single span performance and unique ability to provide remote auxiliary powering. This deployment has helped Brazoria to significantly increase its bandwidth without trenching fiber.

“Positron’s Aktino Flexstream product line has the correct mix of performance and features to make it the only viable solution to provide wireless backhaul services to our Tier 1 customers,” said Jason Thomas, Brazoria Engineering. “At one of our sites, we were able to triple our capacity per pair. At this site, we had 16 pairs and were limited to eight T1s. With Positron’s AK355 Flexstream solution we are now serving 24 T1s on 16 pairs to a Tier 1 wireless carrier. We can now extend the service from 45 Mbps to 100 Mbps with the same solution.”

Positron’s Aktino AK355 solution enables the point-to-point transport of DS3 and Fractional DS3 (Channelized, ATM and Clear-Channel) as well as 100 Mbps Carrier Ethernet Service over bonded copper pairs. It bonds together 2 to 16 copper pairs creating a symmetric or asymmetric high-bandwidth link capable of delivering up to 100 Mbps out to 12 Kft/3.7 Km or 45 Mbps out to 17 Kft/5.2 Km, making it the ideal solution for Carrier Ethernet service delivery and backhaul applications. The AK355 is also environmentally hardened and can be either line or locally powered.

“Using the Aktino line powering option was an added benefit because we were able to remotely power an M13 Mux and save over $60,000 dollars in expenses required for the external power cabinet for the M13 Mux at a cell site,” added Thomas.

AK355 solution can also provide MEF (News - Alert) certified business Ethernet service on the same hardware, so it becomes easy for Brazoria to switch from delivering DS3 services to providing 100 Mbps Ethernet service on the same hardware with no installation or removal costs.
