AEPONyX Intros Single Fiber 40-Channel Metro Ethernet Access platform

By Anshu Shrivastava, TMCnet Contributor

AEPONyX has unveiled the world’s first single fiber 40-channel Metro Ethernet Access platform at a trade event.

Philippe Babin, vice president of sales and marketing at AEPONyX, said that after two years of development, the company’s patent-protected AEPON technology, which makes WDM-PON scalable and easy to deploy, has now succeeded on all counts as part of the final customer trials, and is now generally available.

AEPON stands for Active Ethernet Passive Optical Network. It’s the company’s implementation of dense wavelength division multiplexing passive optical network technology (DWDM-PON). Company officials said that it’s based on use of long-reach AEPONyX Omnicolor small form pluggable (SFP) transceivers outfitted with AEPONyX Colorplugs pluggable unicolor filters.

The AEPONyX platform has been developed keeping in mind providers of metro fiber service. It comes with a reach of 60 km and enables the wholesale of Metro Access and Metro Transport through the cross-connection of Dense and Coarse WDM-PON wavelengths at the Ethernet level.

Each AEPON channel features a DWDM-side outside plant access component and a CWDM-side network-to-network interface (NNI). Company officials said that it enables 40 circuits to be multiplexed onto one outside plant fiber and 16 circuits to be multiplexed onto one NNI fiber.

Francois Menard, chief technology officer and co-founder of AEPONyX, said that the company’s customers are welcoming the solution because they can multiplex 40 circuits onto a single fiber, yet retain the robustness of a dedicated port with the full functionality of a Carrier Ethernet network-to-network interface for each circuit they wholesale.

The AEPONyX platform is built with state-of-the-art Carrier Ethernet components and is touted as the first to unleash the combined potential of the entire DWDM C & L bands.

Montreal, Canada based AEPONyX is a start-up telecom system company. “The breadth of our AEPON product portfolio is the most comprehensive WDM-PON solution and it enables our metro access customers to generate new streams of revenues from their fiber networks,” Babin said.

Recently, MEL Telecom announced the signing of a strategic business contract with AEPONyX for initiating sales and marketing of the world's first Carrier Ethernet platform based on WDM-PON technologies
