Netgear (News - Alert), which sells branded networking products and networking products for small businesses and homes, has many offices worldwide and had a big problem. With more managers working and traveling overseas, overage charges for international voice and data roaming were killing the company. They needed a way to contain unpredictable smartphone service plan costs as well as control corporate application data residing on employee’s smartphones—enter mobile device management provider MobileIron.
The company ultimately turned to the MobileIron’s Virtual Smartphone Platform to monitor billing and phone quality issues, according to Chris Field, director of IT operations at Netgear.
How did the solution work? Netgear is now rolling out MobileIron 2.0 to more than 250 of its BlackBerry (News - Alert) users and Field estimates that the company has saved over $30,000 a year through utilizing this mobile device management solution.
What’s different about the MobileIron Virtual Smartphone Platform is that it combines data-driven smartphone management with real-time wireless cost control. “For example”, company officials say, MobileIron “can secure and manage only the data that is sensitive to the enterprise, as defined by the system administrator,” and not bother with all the personal stuff such as pictures, music and personal apps.
Netgear used MobileIron to find employees who used their cards from their company- issued phones on their personal smartphones, and then was able to completely eliminate those charges. Before MobileIron, Field said, if an employee had a new assignment in China, for example, and used his phone overseas without checking the roaming rates, “It could literally add up to hundreds of dollars a day.” Now with MobileIron, the company gets alerts to notify both the user and IT when roaming starts and usage thresholds are hit.
Furthermore, another great advantage from the mobile device management provider is that when employees lose their phones, Netgear’s IT team can use MobileIron’s remote wipe capability to take off any sensitive company data, and create a replacement easily and quickly.
Last week, TMCnet reported that MobileIron officials announced that its Connected Cloud is now available to businesses around the world. Connected Cloud is the first multi-tenant mobile device management (MDM) cloud service that can be integrated with a company’s current enterprise security infrastructure.
