Mobile Device Management: Using MobileIron with iPass

By Michelle Amodio, TMCnet Contributor

With mobile services quickly making a move towards the cloud, now more than ever mobile device management is a priority speeding its way to the top of IT managers’ lists. Mobile employees need to be able to work from wherever and whenever, thus IT staff needs to focus on the right mobile device management solution to control devices.

The iPass Open Mobile (News - Alert) Client is one such mobile device management solution, acting as a gateway between its mobility services, giving IT managers ease of control over difficult to manage or disparate mobile devices. The solution is a great mobile device management tool, providing a seamless environment for BYOD (bring your own device) employees.

MobileIron, a mobile device management provider, can securely configure and distribute iPass (News - Alert) Open Mobile client rather easily. In the company’s YouTube video, MobileIron demonstrates the mobile device management implementation.

MobileIron parterned up with iPass earlier this year, allowing businesses utilizing MobileIron’s mobile device management solution to deliver iPass mobile apps. This in turn gives IT staff the ability to cater wireless options for specific needs, offering both companies the ability to secure, manage, and monitor both app and device deployment as well as connectivity throughout an organization.

In the video, MobileIron took an unmanaged iPad and turned it into a fully functioning device that is properly managed through MobileIron and the iPass Open Mobile client.

An unmanaged iPad needs the MobileIron mobile device management client from the App Store. In the example provided, MobileIron set the application security policies to be pushed out to devices that are registering. This works for iOS version 5 or later.

The device must not be compromised, also known as “jailbroken” or rooted for the mobile device management solution to work.

Once the mobile device management app has been installed and configured per the instructions from MobileIron, the iPad is secure and managed by MobileIron.

From the mobile device management app from MobileIron, the user can now install enterprise-recommended applications, such as iPass Open Mobile for iOS, which can then connect all iOS devices to over 600,000 Wi-Fi venues in 121 countries with one single username and password.

The mobile device management example set forth in the video demonstrates how MobileIron and iPass give IT the ability to secure, manage and monitor app and device deployment and connectivity across the entire enterprise. Without sacrificing security, mobile applications can be securely distributed, ensuring reliable mobile device management now and for years to come.
