Enforcing Corporate Security Policies with Mobile Device Management Provider MobileIron

By David Gitonga, TMCnet Contributing Writer

Secure mobile device management for a workforce is becoming increasingly important as enterprises shift to allowing more of their employees to use personal devices in the workplace. Even when an enterprise supplies these mobile devices, it is still necessary to ensure mobile policy compliance for data security. Remote access through VPN has been around for some time, but the changing mobile landscape has demanded news ways of enhancing security.

In order to employ intelligent VPNs, technologies like the Cisco (News - Alert) AnyConnect Secure Mobile Client make the VPN experience simpler in a number of ways. It allows mobile workers to automatically select the optimal access point and it adapts to the most efficient tunneling protocol. To make mobile device management even much simpler, companies like MobileIron make it possible to install, configure and secure Cisco AnyConnect Client.

According to a recent video, a user first registers his or her device with MobileIron by downloading the client application from the App Store. After installation, the user is required to enter the MobileIron server details and the Active Directory username and password. Security profiles are then automatically pushed down from the server which the user needs to accept, that includes setting a compulsory lock code. Once the profiles have been successfully applied, MobileIron is then able to fully manage the device.

From here, to get mobile device management up and running is as easy as installing enterprise-recommended apps from the MobileIron app. To access the VPN, a Cisco AnyConnect Client app will need to be installed and the mobile device management provider pre-configures the VPN profile with a certification for authentication.

Mobile device management with MobileIron is vital as this solution monitors what users download and install on their devices. Any violation of the corporate security policy is automatically detected and the VPN profile is removed almost immediately.
