Mobile Device Management More Successful When Employees are Self-Sufficient

Coming up with a reliable estimate on average mobile device management costs is difficult to achieve as every operation is different. Largely, mobile device management costs are driven by how the person uses the device, how capable that person is to troubleshoot their own device, the company’s security policy, and what programs are running on the device.



 In a bring your own device (BYOD) scenario, the user has administrative privileges, which means IT staff aren’t handling work orders. According to this MobileIron blog post, it leads to lower mobile device management administrative and IT costs for the company. However, in a situation where the BYOD deployment is more advanced, there can be increased costs associated with it. 

In a BYOD scenario where users are coming in with Android (News - Alert), iOS, and Windows phones, the mobile device management workload on IT grows, especially if the company is providing apps, certificates, e-mail and training. But in a situation where the company is setting up an operation for one type of operating system, there is little work required of IT staff.

A successful BYOD program generally requires mobile device management phases where IT has the resources they need to smoothly roll out the program. Many companies have found success in putting together teams of no more than five people who have a working knowledge of the various sides of the business, from IT to privacy to legal. 

These teams are able to keep the ongoing management issues at 5,000 to 10,000 devices power administrator, which is an optimal number. BYOD deployments where the devices per administrator fall below 5,000 are considered inefficient and more costly. Using services that take the weight off of IT in mobile device management is also recommended. 

MyPhone@Work is one such service that allows users to self-register their devices. As more employees become self-sufficient, the number of work orders to IT drops dramatically. But in order for this to occur, the work has to be done up front to get the employees moving in the right direction. Once properly equipped and trained, employees are better able to stay the course and adhere to internal policies. 

A company that takes a measured approach to planning their mobile device management and BYOD programs encounters fewer problems and faster rates of users become self-sufficient. This speed and efficiency also impacts the bottom line as employees are freed up to focus on their core tasks to drive revenue and even improve the customer experience. 

The number of personally owned devices coming in to the workplace increases daily. Employees are more productive when their work goes mobile, but a successful mobile device management program will keep the network secure and IT costs down. Security and support are the cornerstones of a healthy BYOD program as the benefits of being mobile are quickly negated if the mobile employee can’t access the applications or information they need while on-the-go.
