Anticipated iPhone 5 Launch Heightens Need for Mobile Device Management

By Susan J. Campbell, TMCnet Contributing Editor

The release of the iPhone (News - Alert) 5 is creating a stir among mobile users who are looking for the latest and greatest in smartphone technology. The new design of the iPhone 5 and its faster processor are likely to bring consumers out in droves. It will also force IT management to consider yet another mobile device management strategy.

Fortunately, there is a company working to assist others in deploying iPhones and its bigger brother, the iPad, for company use while keeping security uncompromised. MobileIron is positioned as a leader in developing mobile IT solutions for thousands of organizations, giving them an outlet to transform through enterprise mobility.

MobileIron also has an enterprise app storefront that helps companies distribute iOS applications, according to this MobileIron page. Companies get an edge when they distribute their iOS apps internally because they are then eligible to take part in the iOS developer enterprise program through MobileIron.

Inventory and asset management should be on the list of any company looking for efficient and effective mobile device management, and MobileIron brings those capabilities, as well as role-based device management options for a more refined approach. As diverse companies with a wide range of specialties look to mobile technologies to enhance operations, the demand for flexible options is expected to grow.

One of the biggest worries associated with mobile device management is the security of these devices that contain sensitive company information. Security in mobile device management can’t be taken lightly, and MobileIron’s remote device lock and swipe capability is a step in the right direction, as is the password and encryption policy and lockdown procedures on various applications associated with the iPhone, including iTunes, Safari, and YouTube (News - Alert). Any device that is suspected to have been compromised can be remotely locked out and/or blocked.

Mobile device management directors can have the control to track installed applications and distribute those developed in-house with ease. Any apps that have not yet been approved, but still make it onto the phone, can be subject to the control of management as well under the MobileIron solution. Control is needed for costs as well, so the ability to monitor international roaming is part of the solution.

The list of services available through the company’s mobile device management solution are impressive and will serve as a great asset to companies looking to deploy the new iPhone 5 into their lineup of mobile devices.  Also, the solution is mobile activity intelligent, which means users will have access to international roaming alerts, and they can also perform speed tests for cellar service or for Wi-Fi.

As the need for advanced options continues to grow within the mobile organization, MobileIron is well positioned to measures up to the growing needs.
