Mobile Device Management Provider Unveils Mobile App Persona for the Enterprise

By Rajani Baburajan, TMCnet Contributor

MobileIron, a provider of mobile device management solutions, is helping enterprises separate business and personal data in a Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) scenario.

The mobile device management provider has just today introduced a complete mobile app persona for the enterprise, which enables enterprises to secure data-at-rest and data-in-motion for business apps while preserving the native experience their users demand.

“Mobile apps are exploding across our customer base. App developers must move fast and innovate but still secure business app data and app traffic,” said Bob Tinker, CEO, MobileIron, in a statement. “Until now, these app developers had to trade off user experience against security. They no longer have to make that compromise.”

An enterprise app persona, which includes all the apps and data used for business on a mobile device, is associated with a specific user, based on that user’s identity, and managed through a specific policy.

The mobile app persona for enterprises comprises of two new products: MobileIron AppConnect, which containerizes apps to protect app data-at-rest without touching personal data; and MobileIron AppTunnel, which provides tunneling and access control to protect app data-in-motion without requiring VPN. AppTunnel also allows apps in the enterprise app persona to securely connect to data stores behind the firewall.

According to Tinker, “MobileIron AppConnect and AppTunnel make security painless for the developer, simple for Mobile IT and invisible to the user.”

These robust offerings provide several new capabilities including authentication of user identity; authorization to allow or block app usage or data; single sign-on; configuration of personalized settings; encryption of all app data stored in the device; data loss prevention (DLP) controls; dynamic policy; reporting; and selective wipe.

The new enterprise app persona supports all major app operating systems, including iOS and Android (News - Alert), secures both internal and third-party apps, and provides containerization through both an app wrapper and a software development kit (SDK).

Moreover, this offering proves the mobile device management provider’s commitment to protecting privacy. Privacy has become a top concern in today’s BYOD scenario because most employees use their mobile devices for both personal and business purposes, regardless of who owns the device.
