Mobile Device Management Space Gets Boost from IBM, Good Technology and More

By Susan J. Campbell, TMCnet Contributing Editor

The corporate environment is changing as mobility is gaining momentum and employees increasingly bring their own devices into the mix. Mobile device management solutions help IT departments better manage the mobile devices accessing the network. Now, IT managers will have access to improved capabilities, thanks to new enhancements from Good Technology, IBM (News - Alert) and others.

According to this Computerworld report, Good Technology has inked a partnership with BoxTone (News - Alert) and IBM in order to develop mobile app development tools. Blue Coat was also in the mix, unveiling a mobile device security (MDS) service for iOS devices. Operating with the Blue Coat Cloud Service, the MDS provides IT with granular control over mobile apps and applications that run over mobile browsers.

Blue Coat touts the value of its Webpulse technology, something the company describes as a collaborative defense in the cloud, supporting 75 million users. Webpulse is a URL filter that helps prevent Web-based threats or content from gaining enterprise access. It also prevents access to anything others have found to be objectionable or that needs to be blocked.

The partnership between Good Technology and BoxTone is expected to lead to the dramatic improvement of mobile device management solutions, as well as application management. As an enterprise mobility management system, it will allow users to deploy large numbers of devices more quickly and safely, while also delivering security, monitoring and management for Android, iOS, Windows Phone and BlackBerry smartphones and tablets.

Enterprises will have access to tools to support rapid mobile app development across various platforms thanks to a new Mobile Development Lifecycle solution from IBM. Development teams will be able to better collaborate using tools that have proven to improve delivery time by 25 percent, reduce app development costs and reduce app defects by 20 percent.

The company has also unveiled a new service that will help customers plan and strategize on mobile infrastructure deployments. The Security Access Manager tool for cloud and mobile environments provides federated single sign-on, risk scoring and user authentication for remote access. Information captured is based on the location, device and access patterns of the user and will aim to stop the inadvertent breach of sensitive corporate data.

The mobile device management industry also got a boost from Zenprise (News - Alert) last week as the company released an update to its MobileManager 8.0. The added Zensuite enables the secure management of content across e-mail, apps and intranets. Mobile users can leverage the new product to view encrypted attachments in e-mail in a protected app, keeping sensitive data firmly in place. Plus, IT managers can selectively wipe cached intranet data on mobile devices, while the tool will also prevent users from removing protected data from a mobile app.

Finally, Brainshark seamlessly integrated its SlideShark product with Syncplicity from EMC (News - Alert). This integration will expand access to PowerPoint presentations stored in the cloud and enable them to be easily shared on iPhones and iPads. This free app is integrated with Dropbox and Google (News - Alert) Drive. Given the easy access to cloud-based capabilities, the application of mobile device management is critical to protect sensitive information.
