This year, mobile device management provider MobileIron saw the way customers think about mobile deployments dynamically change, from securing devices to focusing on delivering and securing content and apps on mobile devices.

In turn, it focused in on powering robust features that would make mobile a primary IT platform, while allowing businesses to transform and increase their competitiveness.

With the launch of its two apps, AppConnect and AppTunnel, Clarissa Horowitz, director of Communications, told TMCnet in an exclusive interview that the company can now protect app data on multiple devices (data-at-rest) without touching personal data, in addition to as it flows to the device (data-in-motion) by tunneling app traffic through MobileIron’s intelligent gateway, Sentry for secure transport and access control.

Also, it is easy for any large organizations to distribute apps to users through its scalable app delivery, without network load or download latency at a cost-effective price.

2012 marked the time period in which the mobile device management provider unveiled its data loss prevention (DLP) for native e-mail, which prevents unsanctioned consumer apps from opening iOS e-mail attachments and man-in-the-middle attacks from rogue Wi-Fi on ActiveSync e-mail traffic; enterprise Android (News - Alert), which powers the deepest and broadest Android security for BYOD, regulated and ruggedized environments; multi-user for shared devices, which allows a bunch of people to leverage the same iOS device simultaneously; and Mac OS X, which manages Macs together with iOS and Android by extending MobileIron to Mac OS X enrollment, configuration and inventory management.

“All of these portfolio enhancements were revealed as the organization continued to see companies go from pilot to full production with their mobile deployments. This meant managing thousands of devices, supporting multiple operating systems, and most importantly, starting to mobilize their business processes with mobile apps,” Horowitz stated.

As the New Year is almost here, the shift in focus from devices to apps and content that began in 2012 is set to become mainstream in 2013.

She added, “People have been talking about the post-PC era since MIT’s (News - Alert) David Clark first the term in 1999. And the conversation has always been about devices. But 2013 is the real post-PC era and we are going to see the mobilization of business processes on a global scale. Mobile becomes the primary computing platform. Apps become the way people do their work. Enterprises become ‘mobile first’ organizations. Companies move beyond MDM and focus on mobile apps, content, and documents. They use mobile for innovation: to transform their business and increase their competitiveness.”

Further, Horowitz is predicting that BYOD will evolve into Bring Your Own Apps and mobile will alter once and for all how people do their work.
