New Innovations Allow MobileIron to Firm up Enterprise Mobility Service

By Joe Rizzo, TMCnet Contributing Writer

I have often said that we live in a generation of being connected all the time, everywhere. Normally when I say this, I am referring to a younger crowd that likes to constantly be in touch with their peers. Thanks to the continuing deployment of LTE (News - Alert) networks, we have faster data speeds. Thanks to the availability of cloud services, this generation is not limited in the amount of storage space they have or a way of transferring information.

Various reports show that there is a constant growth in the mobile market. A recent report from IDC (News - Alert) estimates that the sale of tablets will increase by around 18 percent by the end of the year. In addition, we can see a growth of about 12 percent in the smartphone market. If that is not enough to back up my generation statement, then how about the fact that the estimated cloud spending including technology and services will surge by 25 percent in the next 12 months to an estimated $100 billion?

The thing is that thanks to the proliferation of bring your own device (BYOD), this always-connected, everywhere collective now spans the generations. By that I mean that as a workforce, at one time, we only had to be concerned with being connected while in the office. Once you left the office, you left your connection behind and in most cases, your work.

Mobile devices have changed all that. These days, being connected and being able to work form just about anywhere is the norm. No one knows this more than MobileIron, as global companies rapidly move forward in an attempt to transform their businesses with mobile apps, content and devices. BYOD has moved the workforce past the PC onto an era of mobile devices, and this has a major impact on IT professionals. The IT world is becoming the Mobile IT world.

According to an article in ITProPortal, it is with all of this in mind that at last week’s InfoSecurity Europe conference, MobileIron announced that it has integrated three new capabilities into its Enterprise Mobility Management (EMM) offering. The goal is to assist companies with mobile deployments, while at the same time, ensure that they are completely secure, because security does become a major factor when dealing with mobile devices. The conference is considered to be Europe's number one Information Security event.

Sean Convery, who is vice president of product management at MobileIron, said the following: “Mobility unlocks human potential in the workplace and helps our customers establish competitive advantage. But as a company’s mobile deployment expands, the operational burden on IT can become overwhelming without the right management platform.”

That is why MobileIron has integrated Help@Work’s iOS screen-sharing technology, Tunnel’s innovative per app VPN on iOS and Splunk’s (News - Alert) software to its EMM. Anyone who as ever worked at an IT help desk knows how difficult it is to get someone to describe what their problem is or how they encountered it. Believe me, I speak from experience.

This problem becomes even more difficult when you are talking about a mobile device. By providing the opportunity to share an iOS screen with support staff by simply tapping a button, Help@Work makes iOS help desk support a lot easier. Keep in mind that this is not a remote control program; it simply allows the support staff to view the user’s screen so that they don’t have to attempt to describe it. You have no idea how much time this can save. The Help@Work experience can also be customized with a few HTML modifications.

In iOS 7, Apple (News - Alert) added support per app VPNs and other EMM features. In fact, per app VPNs for mobile devices have been emerging for some time on most of the mobile platforms. What really makes these VPNs an asset is that they can be applied to any managed App Store app without the need for special development or app wrappers. In a BYOD environment it makes sense to isolate the enterprise data and apps on a one-by-one basis.

Finally, we have Splunk to round off the three new integrations for MobileIron. Splunk is a popular system for collecting large amounts of log data from Web servers and similar systems for analysis. MobileIron’s agreement allows them to embed Splunk’s software into its platform. In addition, the company also released the MobileIron App for Splunk Enterprise.

With this integration, MobileIron can feed its logs directly into Splunk. This allows administrators to chart the use of features by several options that include device type, by region and a substantial number of other interpretations of mobile usage data. Splunk can also correlate mobile with other enterprise data to give a better picture of usage across the entire space.

As you can see, the integration of these additional resources into MobileIron’s EMM has a twofold effect. The first and possibly most important is the fact that it adds a great deal of security, which is always extremely important. Something else that it adds to the mix is the ability to save time, which relates to money and several other factors. Having dealt with running several IT and help desk departments in previous lives, being able to use Help@Work’s iOS screen sharing technology is more valuable than you can imagine.
