Stonesoft has advised users to regularly update the operating system of their mobile device to combat cybercrime. Noting the increasing popularity of mobile devices, Stonesoft says that it is important for consumers to be aware of tips meant to help them securely indulge in activities such as paying bills and shopping with mobiles.
Stonesoft has shared tips for the secure use of mobile devices and notes that users should install programs only from reliable sources such as iTunes and Google (News - Alert) Play. It pays to be careful with in-app purchases as these are often very expensive. Mobile users should carefully read the user rights and privacy policies they have accepted and change the default access code and the PIN code of the SIM card.
It is important to ensure that your mobile device supports data encryption, and connect it to an online service that is designed to remotely locate a lost or stolen device. Users should immediately inform the operator if their mobile device is stolen; remove all personal information when changing your mobile device; and ensure that there is backup of all data in your mobile device.
“To a consumer, cybercrime may seem a distant threat that is related to international espionage or hacking into big enterprises,” said Joona Airamo, chief information security officer at Stonesoft, in a statement. “However, a consumer shopping online can also be harmed. With your mobile device, you also carry a significant collection of important personal information, including your credit card number.”
Stonesoft delivers software based, dynamic and customer driven network security solutions that secure information flow and simplify security management.
The company was in news earlier this month when it signed an agreement with the Algerian Ministry of Post and Information & Communication Technologies (MPTIC) to raise awareness and knowledge about cybercrime and to provide academic security training in Algeria.
