40 Billion Minutes and Counting: D2 Technologies Extends Mobile Unified Communications

By Tim Gray, TMCnet Web Editor

After hitting the 40 billion minutes of traffic per month milestone recently, D2 Technologies is continuing to focus on extending its reach into the mobile unified communications space.

Although the embedded IP communications software platform provider’s VoIP technology is currently processing more than 40 billion minutes of traffic per month – in part due to an increasing number of system on a chip (SoC) vendors – the Santa Barbara, Calif.-based company is continuing to push its services beyond its original technologies.

From carrier-provided CPE equipment and enterprise unified communications devices to next generation processors that support optimized converged communications in mobile devices, the evolution of the D2’s vPort has helped establish new industry benchmarks for high quality VoIP with advanced features and functionality.

“vPort is well-known for its high voice quality, unmatched interoperability and rich feature set, and is field proven in many service provider, enterprise and connected home deployments,” said Doug Makishima (News - Alert), vice president of marketing and sales at D2 Technologies.

D2’s vPort embedded IP communications supports services such as VoIP, VoIM (third party IM/VoIM communities such as Skype (News - Alert), GoogleTalk, Yahoo! and MSN), video over IP and IMS.

And part of D2’s ongoing success is directly related to the versatility the vPort has demonstrated. It is available on the widest array of SoC’s and ODM/OEM platforms in the industry. As a result, manufacturers are using vPort to deliver new VoIP-enabled communications devices to market more quickly and affordably, according to Makishima.

At the same time, D2 recently integrated processors from Cavium Networks (News - Alert) into its lineup in a bid to offer OEMs and ODMs a quicker and more effective method for developing voice/video/data equipment for the enterprise and carrier class markets.

D2 will now support Cavium’s OCTEON II multi-core MIPS64, which is expected to boost performance of D2’s vPort’s ‘softDSP’ VoIP technology while streamlining the overall design.

In addition to Cavium Networks and its OCTEON family of processors, D2’s representative customer and partner products now using vPort include Freescale Semiconductor’s PowerQUICC II Pro System on Chip platform, U4EA Technologies and its Horizon HG1100 Home Office Gateway, Applied Micro Circuits (News - Alert) Corporation’s PowerPC 405EX processor, and SFR’s Neufbox gateway for the Neuf Telecom network, to name a few.
