Mobile VoIP: iTel VAS Service Lets Operators Offer the Stars

By Mae Kowalke, TMCnet Contributor

Telecom service providers have another potential revenue stream thanks to the new iTel VAS service offered by REVE Systems.

Providers who use either the iTel Mobile Dialer Express or iTel Switch Plus offered by REVE now have the ability to offer non-voice value-added services (VAS) to their customers through the iTel VAS service, REVE explained. Customers just need to enter a short code and follow the interactive voice prompts to use the service, which sits between customer and the provider’s softswitch.

Globally, telecom service providers earn from 20 to 30 percent of their revenues from VAS, REVE said.

Currently iTel VAS  includes Astrology Live and Friend Chat, with more to come. The Astrology Live service connects customers with an expert astrologer who will tell their fortune and provide guidance on relationships, marriage, property, business and career choices, among others.

“They can know their fortune and see what the stars have for them,” the company noted. “Your customers can get true predictions and correct answer for their queries as per astrological practices.”

The other iTel VAS service available at launch is Friend Chat, which plays off customer’s inherent social impulses. It lets customers chat with each other, which the company bills as a way to make serendipitous connections with new people.

The company writes that customers “can share their everyday experiences, thoughts, jokes, and kill their monotony. Life will never be the same with this amazing service.”

Providers can choose one of three billing models when offering the service to their customers, according to the company: Pay per minute, pay per transaction and a subscription model. With the pay per minute model, customers pay for each minute they use Astrology Life or Friend Chat and are charged according to 60 by 60 billing increments. With the pay per transaction model, billing is by transaction.

“You can charge him a fixed amount irrespective of the minutes used,” REVE explained. “You can charge him 5 dollars whether he is speaking for 1 minute or 15 minutes.”

The third payment model providers can choose is the subscription model. Customers either pay a monthly subscription and get unlimited use or can use the services at a reduced rate. The company notes that providers could charge $20 per month and allow the customer unlimited VAS use, for instance.

The service currently is available in English, Hindi, Bengali, Malayalam, and Punjabi languages.
