Bandwidth Clogs Don't Stop Operators Who Use iTel Byte Saver from REVE Systems

By Mae Kowalke, TMCnet Contributor

Operators would like to think that their mobile telephony solutions serve their customers wherever mobile communications is needed. But even in major parts of New York City service can sometimes be spotty, not to mention rural areas.

Limited bandwidth still is a reality for customers in many situations, and there are few ways to alienate consumers more than not delivering service that is expected.

Therefore, it’s especially important that mobile operators pay attention to efficiently delivering mobile services so low-bandwidth is not a pressing issue.

One solution to the problem comes from REVE Systems, which offers operators an innovative low-bandwidth solution with its iTel Byte Saver.

The iTel Byte Saver solution basically is server-side software that provides tunneling, NAT service and bandwidth management for mobile VoIP. It works efficiently in between the provider’s mobile VoIP client and softswitch to boost quality and cut down on bandwidth.

Bandwidth can be reduced up to 70 percent on the originating end by using iTel Byte Saver, which employs REVE’s proprietary tunneling technology, according to the company.

A mobile VoIP call made from REVE’s iTel Mobile Dialer Express on the G.729 codec uses roughly 25 kbps, the company noted. But when iTel Byte Saver is used for tunneling the call from the client to the operator’s softswitch, that same call can be reduced to as low as 9.6 kbps.

NAT support for iTel Mobile Dialer Express also means that iTel Byte Saver can prevent one-way voice problems.

While efficient mobile VoIP transmission is at the heart of iTel Byte Saver, it also has an important second use that keeps users happy: it helps make mobile VoIP calls unstoppable.

While mobile VoIP calls don’t don a cape or bend steel when coupled with iTel Byte Saver, they do gain the powers of bypassing firewalls and blockages.

Because the mobile VoIP call traffic goes through a tunnel, it effectively can bypass many firewalls that otherwise might restrict VoIP traffic. This is good when a smartphone is leveraging a Wi-Fi network to place a call, or when customers are traveling in foreign countries and might be subject to aggressive internet restrictions.

Wherever the SIP protocol or other voice protocols are blocked, iTel Byte Saver establishes a tunnel in order to bypass the firewall or blockage, according to REVE.

Calls still are registered and authenticated by the operator’s SIP switch; iTel Byte Saver only serves as a tunnel and bandwidth manager.

With technologies such as those offered by REVE, operators have few excuses for angry customers.
