Importing the Power of NetFlow's Scrutinizer into the Zenoss Network Management Tool

By David Gitonga, TMCnet Contributing Writer

For efficient monitoring of a network, there comes a time when any loyal Zenoss user will be in search of a ZenPack that allows for the seamless amalgamation of Zenoss and the all powerful NetFlow-based tool Scrutinizer. The pack exists, and so does a step- by-step guide into configuring the integration.

Before starting to use the already downloaded ZenPack, you have to know that there are some small differences between Zenoss 3.x and 4.x. So be sure to first identify your version, as this information will be needed when renaming the ZenPack.

Unzip the .egg file from the download and change the name to ZenPacks.PlixerInternationaScrutinizer-1.2-py2.6.egg if the system is running on Zenoss 3.x.x and to ZenPacks.PlixeInternational.Scrutinizer-1.2-py2.7.eg for the case of version 4.1.1.

Next, navigate to the Advanced>ZenPack menu. Once there, click on the gear next to the Loaded packs and choose install ZenPack. You then will be required to go to the location of the installation (the file we just renamed). That is all there is to do in the installation stage of the integration which should be followed by a restart of the services for the pack to available to the system.

The next step in the process is making configurations aimed at instructing the Zenoss server to connect with Scrutinizer. Select a device class to be analyzed and open its “configuration options.” Configurations made in this menu include those regarding zScrtunizer, zUsername, zPassword, zIP and zlinks.

Finally, add Scrutinizer to the Zenoss dashboard by clicking on the Add Portlet and selecting the Scrutinizer NBA Volume, which should then be configured to point at Scrutinizer.

The Scrutinizer ZenPack you have just installed combines Zenoss and Scrutinizer , a seamless integration that lets engineers rapidly and easily choose between viewing event details in Zenoss and carrying out detailed traffic analysis though the Scrutinizer view. This cocktail is crucial in providing solutions to monitoring and troubleshooting network availability and performance.
