German game developer opens first U.S. studio in Austin [Austin American-Statesman]
(Austin American-Statesman (TX) Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) Jan. 28--German video game developer Crytek announced Monday that it has opened its first U.S. studio in Austin.
The Austin studio, called Crytek USA Corp., is the company's ninth worldwide. It is being led by gaming veteran David Adams "and his team of 35 experienced developers," according to the company website.
"Crytek has always enjoyed a special relationship with gamers and business partners in North America, so establishing a permanent presence in the U.S. was a natural step," Crytek CEO Cevat Yerli said in a news release.
Adams was a founder of Vigil Games in Austin, a THQ-owned studio that slashed jobs last year and whose future is unclear in the wake of THQ's ongoing bankruptcy. THQ was once one of the largest U.S. game companies, but it filed for bankruptcy in December. Its studios and properties were sold off to competitors in a bankruptcy auction last week.
The new studio is the highest-profile opening in Austin since Bethesda Softworks opened a new development studio, Battlecry Studios, late last year.
It was unclear if the new Crytek studio is yet operational; company officials could not be reached for comment Monday afternoon.
Crytek is well known for its "Crysis" franchise, a series of first-person shooter games that are known for pushing graphical limits on PCs. The games have also appeared on the Xbox 360 and Playstation 3 gaming consoles. The company also developed the popular "Far Cry" series.
Crytek was founded in 1999 by Yerli and his two brothers in Frankfurt, Germany. It also has studios in the Ukraine, Hungary, South Korea, the United Kingdom, Turkey, China and Bulgaria
In a statement, Adams said he was "thrilled to be a part of the newest Crytek studio, which will boast some of the brightest development talent in the industry. The studio's launch represents Crytek's commitment to delivering diverse and high quality content to players everywhere."
