The Wenatchee World, Wash., Wilfred Woods column

Feb 08, 2013 (The Wenatchee World - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- Buying cheaper insurance is great, if you never need it.

The advantage of local brokers is that there is somebody that could stand up for you when you need help.

A case in point: we visited in the office with a man whose insurance company had totaled his old car, despite the modest damage. But he was stuck. He had insurance with a national company that has a huge ad campaign, but no local agents.

That's the result of cutting out local middlemen (or women).

They offer lower rates, of course. but no local service.

That business model serves the national companies. But it sure doesn't do much for an individual.
