Holy smokes ... Batman dancing ; HULL: 'Superheroes' promote broadband service [Hull Daily Mail (England)]

(Hull Daily Mail (England) Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) InShort Batman and Spongebob Squarepants danced with a giant banana at Hull train station. The performers were promoting their new broadband service.

PUZZLED passengers were expecting an epic battle when Batman appeared on the platform at Hull train station.

But instead, the caped crusader was joined by Spongebob Squarepants, Darth Vader and a giant banana - all dancing to a hip- hop song called Harlem Shake.

The bizarre performance was created by Hull broadband provider Connexin to advertise its products this weekend.

The beat was so infectious even a police officer joined in the act.

"We thought we could have a great time doing this and show Hull we were a fun company and could have a laugh," said managing director Furqan Alamgir. The business was formed by a group of former Hull Grammar School pupils. They took their inspiration for the stunt from an internet meme sweeping the nation in which groups of people film themselves dancing to the song by American DJ Baauer. YouTube is brimming with videos of firemen, office workers and students showing off their moves.

A Harlem Shake dance has even been filmed with Lego men in stop- motion.

Connexin staff hit on the idea at a group discussion about how to promote their product.

"One of us just started dancing," Furqan said. "It was the best boardroom meeting ever." The dance-off was weeks in the planning.

Furqan contacted FirstGroup for permission to perform at the station.

His company already supplies WiFi to the staff room. "It started off as a scheme just for staff and went on from there," said duty station manager Mike Seton.

"One thing led to another and they met with some of our managers." The group danced in the foyer to begin with, watched by crowds of children and British Transport Police.

PC Cheryl Scrase was so impressed she waltzed with a costumed Robin.

Performers then made for a parked train, leaping about inside one of the carriages.

"We've had a great time," Furqan said.

"There's only been one internet provider in Hull.

"We're the second one and we want to be the fun one." ." Visit www.hull.connexin.co.uk to find out more View on video Watch the bizarre performance www.thisishullandeastriding.co.uk (c) 2013 ProQuest Information and Learning Company; All Rights Reserved.
