BRIEF: Police probe kidnap attempt

MERIDIAN, Feb 22, 2013 (The Meridian Star - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- Local law enforcement agencies are on the lookout for two men who may have been involved in an attempted kidnapping Thursday afternoon.

MPD Capt. Dean Harper, commander of the department's Criminal Investigation Division, said Thursday afternoon patrol officers responded to Bonita Lakes Mall on Bonita Lakes Circle to a report of an attempted kidnapping.

When officers arrived at about 1:50 p.m., they were told by witnesses two black men, one described as being in his 20s or 30s with a small build, tried unsuccessfully to lure an 11-year-old girl into their vehicle. Harper said the girl was able to get away from the two men.

Harper said witnesses told detectives the two suspects were in an older model SUV, possibly a Chevrolet Tahoe, with a broken rear window. Harper said witnesses said the rear window was covered with plastic.

Harper also said authorities continue to investigate this incident and are asking the public to be on the lookout for the vehicle. If you see this vehicle or have any information pertaining to this incident you are urged to call Crime Stoppers at (601) 485-1860.
