Lenovo (News - Alert) and EMC recently completed the formation of LenovoEMC, the joint venture first announced back in August 2012 alongside a broader strategic partnership in both industry standard servers and networked storage solutions. This new joint venture's first order of business is to bring co-branded network attached storage (NAS) based on the core assets of EMC's (News
- Alert) Iomega business to the distributed enterprise, remote branches and SMBs.
The Iomega network storage portfolio includes desktop, tower and rackmount arrays from diskless versions up to 48TB of storage. Iomega NAS solutions include the EMC LifeLine OS, offering industry-leading features and benefits in an easy-to-use package tailored toward small business users, remote enterprise offices and departmental data centers. These capabilities coupled with Lenovo's award-winning ThinkServer and ThinkStation server and workstation offerings result in an ideal combination for these types of customers.
“With the joint venture now underway, there’s a real sense of opportunity and excitement as we work with our partners and customers to firmly establish LenovoEMC Ltd as a leader in the fast-growing global SMB storage market,” said Eric Arcese, president and general manager of LenovoEMC, in a statement.
LenovoEMC has some competition in the NAS market, though, with major players like Red Hat (News

Red Hat also aims to eliminate difficult management with an emphasis on simplicity at all levels, from design to deployment and storage management. This, coupled with a focus on reduced costs, makes Red Hat Storage also attractive to SMBs for the same reasons as LenovoEMC's NAS solutions.
As part of their greater partnership, Lenovo and EMC have also forged an OEM and reseller relationship in which Lenovo can provide EMC's networked storage solutions to its customers in China initially, and other global markets over time.
