Companies Lacking Proper Network Security Create Vulnerabilities

By Susan J. Campbell, TMCnet Contributing Editor

Network security is essential to protecting critical information and infrastructures as vulnerabilities are truly the weakest link in the security of computer systems and networks. In a recent report issued by security firm Secunia (News - Alert), the focus was on the vulnerabilities that will plague the network and continue to haunt users and network administrators unless they are eliminated.

Hackers continue to exploit security flaws in order to gain unauthorized access to files and folders that are stored on a computer system. These less-than-noble individuals may also rely on malicious code or the installation of botnets to gain remote control of computers. During the past year, network vulnerabilities have been a source of discomfort for organizations throughout the world, emphasizing the need for proper network security solutions.

In its report, Secunia emphasizes the importance of managing the prevalent vulnerabilities that exist in order to reduce instances of security breaches by criminals. Vulnerabilities can also allow hackers to launch denial of service attacks, which can put an organization in a bind with customers and other users. As a result, it is important that the organization make network security a priority.

The problem that often exists within the organization is that the management team is not fully aware of the different types of threats that are prevalent in the Internet environment. As a result, they often have inadequate budgetary provisions for IT security and the entire network is left vulnerable.

It is also often assumed that network security is a one-time activity. This leaves the organization even more vulnerable as constant threats in the IT environment exist and it must be treated as a continuous process. Computer security professionals must conduct periodical reviews of the network security infrastructure to identify any threats and determine the right resolution to eliminate that threat.

Flaws can also exist in an organization’s network security strategy when it is believed that these processes are only in place for compliance. Robust security management policies are a must to safeguard the network and systems from security breaches. The incident response team must be in place to address any security threat, and employees should be made aware of the procedures of first response in the event of a data breach.

To ensure that they have the right network security protocols in place, organizations should adhere to the latest security advisories and apply appropriate security patches to mitigate vulnerabilities.

Appropriate and timely patch management is necessary, and IT training session and workshops should be conducted to educate non-technical staff on safe computing practices, how to report unusual activity, proper data protection techniques, use of anti-virus solutions, and how to safely install software upgrades.

With the right plan of action in place, followed up by execution, the organization will be better equipped to drive the right network security and eliminate unnecessary vulnerabilities.
